Freelance Files // 4 // On working from home.

Four months of freelancing have passed me by.
And one thing I think I am still trying to figure out is how to efficiently and affectively work from home.

I mean, I've tried all sorts of things.
Setting up a desk.
Switching up the placement of the desk.
Starting my day as if I was really going to the office.
Sitting in a hard chair.
Listening to happy music.
Listening to mellow music.

None of those things have worked for me.
And I don't know why.
I just sit and piddle and waste my time making lists of chores that I wish I had time to do, but don't, unless I actually stopped messing around and worked faster.

But here is what I've figured out:
And let's just be real here,

I work better, harder, longer and more creatively in my pajamas on the couch.

I said it.
And I wish this wasn't true of me.

When working on a project the most inspiring moments for me come late at night or in the pre-dawn hours.

After I finished my Bible reading this morning, for example, I stayed on the couch, I picked up my laptop with a burst of ingenuity and knocked out a project that has been on my plate for a bit. Still in sweatpants and sipping on my first cup of coffee at 9am, I could hardly tolerate it.

The thing is, had I been working on that same project in my business-as-usual-tradition, it would have taken me twice as long.

Moral of the story (as I see it today) - do what works for you, even you're Type A and can't get over the fact that you said life would not end up this way. Work in your pajamas if it gets the job done.
